Migration Education

  • Providing information and awareness campaigns to potential migrants, returnees, and the general community about the risks associated with irregular migration and the benefits of legal migration.

Advocacy

  • Advocating for better services and addressing policy gaps in the migration management sector in collaboration with the government, stakeholders, and victims of human trafficking.
  • Building coalitions and partnerships with returnees, NGOs, like-minded organizations, and stakeholders to amplify the voices of returnees and advocate for their rights.

Reintegration

  • Ensuring the sustainable reintegration of returnees and survivors through well-thought-out and comprehensive plans.
  • Providing support and resources to facilitate the successful reintegration of returnees into their families and communities.
  • Addressing issues of re-trafficking and reducing the stigma faced by returnees and survivors.

Coordination

  • Facilitating coordination and collaboration among various stakeholders involved in anti-trafficking efforts.
  • Working closely with government agencies, NGOs, and other organizations to align efforts, share resources, and maximize the impact of interventions.

KASMA Project

Through a partnership established with the Freedom Fund in 2022, KASMA has embarked on a project to strengthen its organizational capacity and make its vision and mission a reality. The founders of KASMA have been beneficiaries of partners under the Freedom Fund since 2019, receiving various trainings and support.

To support KASMA’s growth and development, the Freedom Fund has generously provided a grant of $20,000. This funding is focused on enhancing the organizational capacity of KASMA, particularly in building and supporting the executive team and founding members. The key areas of capacity-building include leadership and management training, communication skills development, and financial literacy and basic computer skills training.

In addition to the individual skill development, the support from the Freedom Fund aims to strengthen the overall organizational structure of KASMA. This includes the development of systems and procedures, articulating the vision, mission, and core values of KASMA, as well as formulating strategies for achieving our goals. The project also involves the creation of a comprehensive strategic plan, the development of HR and Finance manuals, and the implementation of a safeguarding policy.

By investing in KASMA’s organizational capacity, the project aims to empower the team to effectively carry out KASMA’s mission of combating human trafficking and supporting survivors. Through the support received from the Freedom Fund, KASMA has working towards establishing a strong foundation that will enable its staff to make a lasting impact in the fight against modern slavery.

The Minderoo Foundation:

KASMA has established a partnership with The Minderoo Foundation in November 2023, receiving a grant of $27,295. This collaboration aims to organize the “Survivors and People with Lived Experience Workshop on the Government Response Index in Ethiopia” in 2024. The workshop holds significant importance as it brings together survivors of human trafficking and individuals with lived experience to provide invaluable insights and perspectives on the government’s response to human trafficking in Ethiopia. By incorporating the voices and experiences of survivors and those directly affected by trafficking, KASMA and The Minderoo Foundation seek to enhance and improve the government’s response to human trafficking in the country. This partnership exemplifies KASMA’s commitment to collaboration and its dedication to ensuring that the perspectives of survivors and individuals with lived experience play a pivotal role in shaping effective responses to human trafficking in Ethiopia. Through the support and collaboration with The Minderoo Foundation, KASMA is working towards creating a platform for survivors and individuals with lived experience to contribute to policy-making processes and advocate for more comprehensive and survivor-centered approaches to combating human trafficking in Ethiopia.

Thrive Program - Empowering Female Returnee Survivors (2023)

The Thrive Program, initiated by the Freedom Fund, aims to address the challenges faced by female survivors who have returned from abusive and exploitative situations in overseas labor markets. The program focuses on providing technical and vocational training, along with additional support services, to help survivors secure stable and long-term employment. By addressing gaps in skills, counseling, and reintegration, the Thrive Program seeks to bring about positive change and contribute to the fight against modern slavery.

The program primarily targets women who have worked as domestic workers in the Middle East and have returned to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. It aims to equip them with market-oriented job training, psychosocial support, life skills, and mentoring, thereby empowering them to overcome the challenges they face and reintegrate successfully into their families and communities. To implement the Thrive Program, the Freedom Fund collaborates with two institutions: Hope Enterprise and Sister Yemisirach Training Institute. These partnerships enable the provision of market-oriented vocational short-term training for the program participants.

Moreover, the Freedom Fund has collaborated with KASMA to facilitate peer support groups and implementing feedback mechanisms for women survivors enrolled in the Thrive project. KASMA Charit has been actively engaged in facilitating peer groups and delivering training on various topics that target the social and psychological development of the program beneficiaries. Our contribution to the Thrive Program’s objectives has been significant, providing essential support and empowerment to the survivors.
